| Wednesday, 5 February, 2003, 11:53 GMT Is Ziese the man for Ghana? ![]() Former Ghana coach Burkhard Ziese wants another chance with the Black Stars. Is he the man for the job? One of the most controversial names in African football is hoping for a return. Burkhard Ziese, the former coach of both Ghana and Zambia, has reapplied for the vacant Black Stars job. Ziese built the team that went to the final of the 1992 African Nations Cup - although it was Otto Pfister that actually took them there. Although popular with the fans and media, Ziese by then had become disillusioned with the politics of the position and left. Now he wants a return - but the GFA are in favour of appointing a local coach, and Ziese's comments regarding their spending attitudes will not have helped. Is Ziese the man for the Black Stars? Or would you rather a local coach got the job? Who would you like to see in charge? Ziese was sacked because he stood his grounds on player selection and better conditions for them, to the dislike of the powers above. Its sad to say these same conditions still exist in Ghana. The solution in my opinion is to use our scarce resources to develop the local coaches to global standards and give them the freedom to run the team. It is a fact that all continental honours by the Black Stars were attained under local coaches. I do not think the problem with Ghanaian soccer rests strongly on acquiring a "special" coach. Burkhard Ziese is undoubtedly one of the best coaches in the world but I hold the opinion that he will not be the best choice for the Black Stars. What Ghana needs is a change in its soccer administration. Our local coaches are competent enough to handle the stars should the authorities and Ghanaians give them the needed support. I am not a Ghanaian but I support Black Stars. If Ziese is the right man, give him the job so that football will grow in Ghana. Tthe problem with local coaches in Africa is that the professionals don't respect them. It is better for the GFA and the government to think twice and give the job to the right person. I want to advise my brothers and sisters in Ghana that they should think twice about giving Ziese the job. He's been a disaster in African football. He came to Zambia and messed up the team. He humiliated respectable stars like Kalusha Bwalya and Johnson Bwalya who were always available and committed to mother Zambia. We made sure he went back faster than he came. Mr. Ziese is absolutely the man for the Black Stars. His coaching philosophy fully suited the expectations of Ghanaians. We are looking forward to him coming back and continuing with the soccer transformation he couldn't see through last time. I hope the GFA will choose the right candidate for the Black Stars, as Ghanaian football is sinking to hell. Whichever coach deserves it should take up the job. But God help the coach who is selected. Ziese went to Zambia and was a big flop, so what makes him a better couch than the locals? We believe too much in foreigners and do very little to promote our own. Can Ziese be appointed German couch? If this guy is a good coach, he would have moved on to a top job. The GFA move on and pick a better coach and not go back to the past. Ziese is the man for the Black Stars. He understands and feel Ghana's style of play. With his no-nonsense attitude, no player can disrespect him or do whatever he pleases. He has done it before and he can do it again. Go Bukhard Ziese! If GFA fails to give him the position, then Ghana will have to wait for 100 to 200 years to play in the World Cup or win any Nations Cup. Several local coaches have failed national teams in Africa, with the exception of a few. Ziese is a terrific coach and has the experience, he has done it before in Ghana, so let's give him a chance to prove himself one more time. Bitter politics should not be infiltrated into football, as it is one of the ingredients that soothes the political nerves of the country's people. As far as am concerned, this man is the best coach for Ghana. The GFA should forget about his sometimes controversial remarks and appoint him and he will surely deliver. The Portuguese coach in question can not be compared to Burkhard Ziese, so lets give him another chance. He deserves it. Anybody who has followed Ghanaian soccer will tell you that Burkhard Ziese is one of the best managers to have ever worked with the Black Stars. I remember very well how after the success of 1982, the Black Stars could not even beat the likes of Liberia and Sierra Leone. We could not even qualify for the African Nations Cup till lo and behold, Burkhard Ziese was brought in. He built a very formidable squad within two weeks and apart from Abedi Pele, who was the only professional at hand, a largely local side beat the Super Eagles of Nigeria in Kumasi in 1991. He then went on to win the Group with two matches to spare. But only the GFA know why they let him go in the first place. If the GFA are reading my piece, let it be known that Ghanaians are fed up with their haphazard approach and interfering attitude. Ziese has come back to us, so GFA swallow your pride and let Burkhard do the job and I can assure you that not only will the Black Stars qualify for the Nations Cup, we will win it and go on to play in the World Cup. For the money that Ghana pays for a foreign coach, he is the best for the job. Bring back Ziese and the Black Stars will rise and shine again! He is the ideal coach for the Black Stars. He has the experience, technical ability and the guts to really transform the team. He has done it before and can do it even better now. Mr. Ziese is a coach with distinction and the GFA knows that. Please stop playing politics with our football and give the job to Ziese. He has done it before, why doubt him now. The devil you know is better than the angel you don't know. GFA, soccer loving Ghanaians will not forgive you if you do not pick him this time. Too many mistakes have been made. We are hungry for a soccer revival and Burkhard is here to save us. Mr. Ziese, welcome back to Ghana. Mr. Ziese is a man whose time has passed. He has had his chance already. The sentimental Ghanaians who want him back are making a big mistake. The game has moved on. Ziese should do the same. I think it's high time African countries stopped appointing foreing coaches. There are a thousand and one coaches in Ghana that can handle the Black Stars. Local coaches should be encouraged and sent abroad for training so they may compete with their foreign counterparts. Mr. Ziese is the man for the job. Ghanaians have confidence in this man. This is a man who has a track record. What we need is results and he has proved it in the past. GFA, do the right thing this time around. Ghanaians will not forgive you this time if you do not pick him. Burkhard is the right man to take up the job. The last time he was in Ghana, he was just outstanding but because of GFA politics he had to leave. I think if he wants to come back, we should give him another chance.
