Has McRory been badly treated?
Art McRory says he's stepped down for personal reasons
The departure of Tyrone football managers Art McRory and Eugene McKenna has caused a major surprise in the world of GAA.

What do you make of the episode?

This debate is now closed.

Art McRory and Eugene McKenna guided Tyrone to the Allianz National Football League title in the Spring.

Yet six months on, the duo's reign has been controversially ended by the Tyrone county board.

Have the Tyrone county board made the right decision and who should take over the Red Hand reins?

What now for Tyrone football?

The Tyrone county board made a mess of the appointment of the two Macs and were severely criticised. But the despicable manner of their dismissal of the pair is nothing short of callousness and incompetence. It's time Tyrone clubs waked up to the fact that their top officials are not capable of doing the job and change is needed at the annual convention.
Kevin Hughes, N. Ireland

History makes me cautious that the correct appointment will be made!
Ronan Gourley, England

Tyrone were best to get rid of McKenna/McRory and get someone new in with fresh ideas. They have a lot of good players but tend too look like boys against men in the championship sometimes (Sligo 2002, Meath 1996) They need to pull together and stop the bickering amongst themselves.

They may have beaten Armagh in recent years, but I don't think I could ever see Tyrone fashion the sort of wins that Armagh did against Dublin and then Kerry. They do not have that physical presence. They need to add the sort of hunger and steel, that Armagh have shown.
Baz, England

Like many in the county I would like to see someone with the calibre of Martin McHugh and the county board need to be willing to spend the required money in order to move forward to get the success that is long overdue.
Barry T., Greencastle Gael

This may prove the turning point for Tyrone's long under-performing Senior County team (only a year behind Armagh!). This is the window to appoint ONE manager, to guide the team to fulfil the potential of an All-Ireland title. However, history makes me cautious that the correct appointment will be made!
Ronan Gourley, England

Well done to McRory for winning the league, which is the best we've won to date.

But, to win the All-Ireland I think we need someone with experience of winning it already, preferably as a manager, and definitely not another manager from Tyrone with no proven success at Senior National level.

Sorry to see Art go, as he has given so much to Tyrone
Terry, Coalisland, Tyrone

So I'd say to ask, in this order...Sean Boylan, Pete McGrath, Brian McEniff, Martin McHugh, if they don't want it, then me.
Eamon Tyrone, Ireland

Sorry to see Art go, as he has given so much to Tyrone. Hope all the smart people realise what a loss he will be. The next man (singular)has the talent available, time will give us the All-Ireland.
Terry, Coalisland, Tyrone

I believe that this will prove to be a positive development for Tyrone football. A change of direction was certainly needed after the Sligo debacle.

The management team that has been so successful at under-age level should be given the opportunity to bring the cycle to its full completion.

If Tyrone can add a powerful midfielder to their squad then there is no reason why they can not do an Armagh and claim that elusive first All Ireland.
Barry B, Spain

I would like to pay tribute to Art McRory's immense and very successful contribution to Tyrone football for the last 40-odd years.

History will show Armagh to be one-hit wonders with no humility.
Finn O'Neill, Tyrone

He is a legend, and if the rumours already coming out are to be believed the manner of his "sacking" are reminiscent of the "ides of march" - a night of the long knives. This man deserved a more dignified exit than this shadowy cowardly episode. Get well soon Art.

Many of the bunch of cretins that run Tyrone GAA are too aloof from the fans and hopefully this episode may result in fan power getting more say over the running of the county.

As for McKenna - no big loss in my opinion. He will be wasting his time applying. If the board were going to keep him, they would surely just have announced Art stepping aside til the league starts and McKenna becoming number one.

My vote for the next manager; Micky Harte deserves his chance. As for OE of Armagh's reference (below) to winning the National League being of no significance, many of us in Tyrone consider it very significant.

Armagh can't deny they have tried very hard to win it in the last 20 years or so. Armagh win the All-Ireland and suddenly they patronise. History will show Armagh to be one-hit wonders with no humility.
Finn O'Neill, Tyrone

It has become quite clear that Art did not offer his resignation, he has been treated terribly by our county board and they should issue a statement clarifying matters. I would like to thank Arthur and Eugene for the great days both them and the team have given to all the supporters.
BN, Tyrone

I would love to see Martin McHugh in charge
Dungannon Gael, Ireland

I want to say it's a disgrace the way that both Art and Eugene have been treated by the County Board. I expect to see an apology issued to both men very soon.

I'd like to think that the players would issue a statement regarding the treatment of their former managers. If Mickey Harte wants the job so badly that he would accept it under these circumstances, maybe him and the county board should play in this year's championship together!
BN, Tyrone

While I wish Art all the best with his recovery, I am delighted for Tyrone football that an under-achieving manager is no longer at the helm. Art's record of failure on the big occasion is second to none.

In 1986 and 1996 when the players where there they were sent out mentally unprepared to win, while in 1995 and the last two years, stubbornness has seen him pick players who just don't have the physical requirements to win an All-Ireland.

It is a myth that no big players exist in Tyrone; they just didn't fit into Art's style of play. I would love to see Martin McHugh in charge as he took a very limited Cavan side to an Ulster title and then was wise enough of a realist to admit he could take them no further - this is the type of realism that Art lacked.
Dungannon Gael, Ireland

I think this is good for Tyrone. A two-man management team never works be it GAA or soccer. A new manager and fresh impetus will hopefully freshen up the team. Winning a National League is of no consequence. Do you think Kerry count their 17?
OE, Armagh
