| Friday, 14 June, 2002, 23:30 GMT 00:30 UK Honour Britain's top sporting stars Newcastle boss Sir Bobby Robson is awarded a knighthood for his services to football. E-mail your congratulations to Sir Bobby. Robson tops an impressive list of British sporting stars featured in the 2002 Queen's Birthday Honours list. Clive Woodward, head coach of the England rugby union team and Hope Powell, coach of the England women's football side, are both to receive an OBE. Rhona Martin's curling team add an MBE to their Olympic Gold medals and Paula Radcliffe adds an MBE to her London Marathon win. Send your tributes to Britain's best. This debate is now closed. A selection of your e-mails appear below. Congratulations to Dickie Dunbar on his OBE for services to rowing. No-one is more deserving than the Portadown man whole has dedicated his life to the sport. Well done Dickie, you are a legend! Arise Sir Bobby! Now for the championship with Newcastle? Congratulations to Bobby Robson: never has a knighthood been so richly deserved. I'm a Man Utd fan at heart, but nothing would give me greater pleasure than seeing Sir Bob get some silverware next season. Good Luck.
Sir Bobby deserves his Knighthood richly, but why has there been no mention of Ian Botham? Yes, his antics off the field have been publicised, but he encompasses a trait that could never be faulted - a passion to win and make his nation proud. As far as many people are concerned, it is sad that one of sports greatest heroes does not get the recognition he deserves. What can be said that hasn't already been said? Kind, enthusiastic, wise, intelligent and a real sporting and everyday gentleman. Bobby's praise and honour is well deserved even if it is ten years too late! I'd like to congratulate Sir Bobby Robson with his knighthood. Despite being Belgian I consider him being one of the last gentleman in sport. What a difference with the way Robert Waseige reacted when the Belgian Press criticised him. Well done to everyone for their honours, especially the curling team. Only comment I really want to make is not about who got recognition but who didn't; in my eyes Bill McLaren deserved a knighthood for all his years of great service to rugby commentary.
Congratulations Sir Bobby. A true Knight of English football. Steven G, UK Tyne & Wear Congratulations on your knighthood, no doubt you were worthy of this honour for the contribution you made to the game you love. Always admired your approach to the game and wish you well in the future. May you bring silverware to Newcastle as you did for so many other teams. I'm absolutely chuffed to bits for Bobby, he definitely deserves this reward. But what I want to know is - Where's Brian Clough's? Clough is also deserving of a knighthood. I would say he deserves a knighthood more than Alex Ferguson (who deserves his too) because he took Derby and Forest to the European Cup, winning it twice with Forest - on the bounce! and with less resources than was available to Fergie. Arise sir Big'ead !
Congratulations Sir Bobby. When people talk about his achievements they tend to overlook the fact that he is the man responsible for discovering the enigmatic Paul Gascoigne. Thank you for everything, Bobby which includes discovering the talent of Gazza. For that alone he should be knighted. Hussain Ali, Virginia, USA Congratulations on your knighthood, Sir Bobby. 'Wor Jackie' would be proud of you as are all of us are. Good luck for the forthcoming season. Howay the lads! Congratulations Sir Bobby. It couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Remember meeting you when you played for West Brom and I never forgot it.
As a Newcastle fan living in the US I am delighted that the nicest man in football has eventually got what all Newcastle and England fans knew he deserved. The only question is: why did it take so long? Many Congratulations to Sir Bobby. It is a much deserved for a man who never has a bad word for anybody - a true gent. Best of luck for the future. Congratulations to Sir Bobby Robson, he deserved it all the way. Long live Sir Bobby. Can we assume that every manager that gets their team into Europe next season will be knighted then? Or is it just teams that the Prime Minister supports? Sir Bobby Robson, it sounds great and just slips off the tongue, and it couldn't happen to a nicer bloke. But isn't it a bit late? For all he's given to this game he should have been knighted years ago.
I want to congratulate "the gentlemen of football" for this honour and want to say that the PSV supporters won't forget his passion and enthusiasm! Gijs den Dulk, Holland Good Job - Sir Bob! Well done to Sir Bobby Robson! Truly most worthy of the knighthood bestowed upon him. It is a pity that his country did not believe in him to the extent of letting him remain as England manager. He would have produced a team comparable to the heroes of 1966. Not only winners, but also proper role models for the young. Bobby Robson is simply the greatest English football manager of the last 30 years Well done Bobby - thanks for two memorable World Cup finals. Good luck with Newcastle in the future. Congratulations to Sir Bobby Robson on an honour not too early in coming. He may not have won as many trophies as Sir Alex, but in many ways he is everything an Englishman should be: Loyal to his roots, his profession and his colleagues. A patient builder, making the most of the resources available to him. A man whose passion burns bright even near the age of 70. A man who, but for the fate of a post, might well have emulated Sir Alf in 1990. If I ever had to choose a grandad other than the ones I had, then Sir Bobby would undoubtedly be that man.
As a fellow geordie I feel really proud that Sir Bobby has been recognised. His contribution to British and world football is enormous. Jim Flaherty, South Africa Congratulations to Sir Bobby Robson. It could not have gone to a more deserving individual, what a gentleman! Anyone involved or interested in football will agree that Sir Bobby richly deserves his award. He's a man who has not only been successful, but has also unfailingly conducted himself with great honour and dignity. Not only is he well-respected, he's also genuinely liked by people, and I can't imagine anyone having a bad word to say about him. What a lovely bloke he is! Well done Sir Bob! Congratulations to Bobby who richly deserves this honour. But I do think he should have been honoured before Sir Alex Ferguson. Well deserved. I remember Sir Bobby as a great footballer at Fulham and a great manager at Ipswich and England. |
