| Wednesday, 22 May, 2002, 16:22 GMT 17:22 UK Lomu set to miss Manchester Lomu won gold in the 1998 Commonwealth Games All Black Jonah Lomu has admitted his chances of appearing in this summer's Commonwealth Games are very low. Lomu's problem is that the dates of the rugby sevens tournament in Manchester clash with the Tri-Nations series involving New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. The All Blacks name their squad on Monday and Lomu expected to be included. If that does happen then Lomu, who won gold at the last Games, will not travel to England.
New Zealand have refused to change the dates of the Tri-Nations and Lomu admits it is frustrating. "It's all up in the air and down to the selectors whether I make the All Blacks" he said. "At the moment it is very unlikely I will be at the Games. I'd like to be at both if I could. I just wish both events didn't coincide as they are very important to me. "However I have to go along with whatever decision the selectors make. Understanding "First and foremost, I am contracted to the New Zealand RFU and whatever they say goes. "There has always been an understanding that if I get selected for the All Blacks then I won't be available for the Games." Lomu is expected to be back in action on Sunday when the Barbarians face England at Twickenham. However he will not be lining up in the following games against Scotland and Wales as he is due to link up with the All Blacks next Wednesday. |
