Vogts under fire
Kevin McNaughton received player of the month accolades last season
Kevin McNaughton is a bright Aberdeen prospect
Aberdeen have officially protested to the Scottish Football Association about the way national manager Berti Vogts has once again singled out young midfielder Kevin McNaughton for criticism.

And it is being claimed that Vogts will be told by his bosses to keep any disparaging remarks about his players behind closed doors in future.

Vogts had said after Wednesday's defeat by Denmark that versatile McNaughton, who was taken off at half-time, was too nervous during the first 45 minutes.

It was the second time that the German coach had made such a suggestion about the 19-year-old.

I spoke to the SFA to voice our concern and displeasure
Dons chief Keith Wyness
Vogts had announced that McNaughton would win his first cap against France at the end of last season only to leave the player on the bench because of perceived nerves before the match against the then world champions.

The latest incident, which has angered the player and team boss Ebbe Skovdahl, has led Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness to contact Vogts' paymasters.

Wyness said: "I spoke to the SFA to voice our concern and displeasure at the comments.

"However, I have agreed to keep the details of the discussions private."

The SFA has insisted that it was always Vogts' intention to replace McNaughton with Celtic's Stephen Crainey at half-time.

Yet McNaughton had playing in an unfamiliar central midfield role, while Crainey was brought on in his usual wide left position.

McNaughton said: "I didn't feel nervous at all and I can't understand why he came out and said I looked nervous.

The manager talked to me about my body language

"I certainly didn't feel nervous when I was out there - even if I didn't appear that confident on the pitch.

"It wasn't just me who couldn't get to grips with the game, but I have to accept I didn't play as well as I know I can.

"It was certainly disappointed that I didn't get out for the second half."

Even so, he added: "The manager talked to me about my body language and I will try to work on his advice."

There have been newspaper claims that Vogts will be "carpeted" by the SFA for his public remarks about the player.
