And as England now look to prepare for the autumn Tests against New Zealand, Australia and South Africa, Kay hopes the spectacular display has thrown selection into the melting pot.

"It is a fantastic situation for the coaches to find themselves in, although maybe not the players.

"There was great hunger in the team. We built ourselves up, and we proved that we had what was required.

"We played some fantastic rugby in the second half and the atmosphere in the changing room afterwards was as good as I can remember anywhere."

Although tried and trusted performers such as Jason Robinson, Jonny Wilkinson and Lawrence Dallaglio will inevitably be part of the autumn squads, England's young prospects did their chances no harm.

Kay, Phil Christophers and Sale flanker Alex Sanderson were all outstanding while Charlie Hodgson also proved that he could step out of Wilkinson's shadow.

And scrum-half Andy Gomersall, who made his first Test start for five years, could well threaten to split up England's long-standing scrum-half pair of Kyran Bracken and Matt Dawson.

Woodward agreed that the victory proves that the squad has outstanding strength in depth.

"We've had some great wins over the past five years, and this one is right up there with them, especially as so many people had said that we shouldn't have come here with this squad," said Woodward.

"It is hugely important in this job that you go game by game, but every team has one eye on the World Cup.

"To give yourselves any chance at a World Cup, you have got to arrive with 30 outstanding players, and a lot of the guys have come through very strongly."
