| Friday, 13 December, 2002, 21:11 GMT Glasgow late show sinks Bourgoin ![]() Glenn Metcalfe scrambles the ball over the line Glasgow 13-12 Bourgoin Glasgow kept alive their slender hopes of Heineken Cup progress with a dramatic last-ditch penalty winner against Bourgoin in a scrappy clash at Hughenden. Going into injury time the Scots trailed to four Alexandre Peclier penalties and looked set to pay for a string of missed kicking chances. However, Calvin Howarth came up trumps when it mattered as Glasgow secured a priceless win at the death. Bourgoin dominated the early exchanges and deservedly broke the deadlock after six minutes when Peclier slotted a penalty following a line-out infringement. The lead proved short-lived as Hayes celebrated his top flight return with an equally convincing kick at the other end. However, the normally reliable stand-off failed to cash in when the Scots were awarded two penalties in as many minutes. The sin-binning of Bourgoin skipper Lionel Nallet on the half hour for failing to release allowed Glasgow some respite and the home side made the numerical advantage pay by grabbing the lead against the run of play.
The match threatened to boil over following a flare-up which saw Pascal Pape aim a punch at Gordon Bulloch. Hayes then failed to capitalise when he hooked another easy penalty woefully wide. The Cook Islander almost atoned on the restart when he produced a dazzling break from his own half, only to be brought down 10 metres short. Bourgoin hauled themselves right back into contention when Peclier slotted two penalties in as many minutes. Minutes after replacing Hayes, Howarth had a shocking miss from straight in front before Peclier punished the error with his fourth successful strike. However, Glasgow's replacement fly-half had the final say.
