Llanelli 45-15 Glasgow

Dwayne Peel helped Llanelli recover from an early Glasgow onslaught and earn a convincing home win for last season's Heineken Cup semi-finalists.

The scrum-half, a contender to be Wales' long-term replacement for Rob Howley, scored a superb brace of tries and earned the sponsors' man-of-the-match award.

The Scots trailed just 11-10 at half-time, but they had no answer to the firepower brought out by the Scarlets in the second half.

The Welsh team love the intensity of Europe's premier club competition and look to be building another formidable challenge this season.

Glasgow opened the try scoring, a heavy hit from prop Lee Harrison on flanker Simon Easterby winning turnover ball for skipper Jason White to convert.

Fly-half Tommy Hayes was leading from the front and had only been denied a try himself by a fine covering tackle from Garan Evans.

It was full-back Evans who got the home side back into the game, finishing off a sparkling move created by Leigh Davies in midfield.

Lee Harrison was sin-binned for a high tackle, and in the second half the Scarlets began to take control.

Peel raced 55 yards for his first, then added another when he chipped ahead and gathered to cross under the posts.

Flanker Ian Boobyer and prop Martyn Madden added further scores as the visitors faded badly.

The Scots managed to respond with a try from flanker Donnie Macfadyen, before Llanelli fly-half Stephen Jones took his match haul to 16 points with his seventh successful kick.

Replacement fly-half Gareth Bowen added a final penalty to complete a performance that will send a clear warning to Europe's other rugby superpowers - the Scarlets are back in business.

Llanelli coach Gareth Jenkins was pleased with the second-half display:

"I was pleased with the way we did not panic when things weren't going right, we adjusted well during the game and there will be no complaints from anyone in our camp," he said.

Glasgow coach Kiwi Searancke was impressed with the Scarlets:

"They are a well organised side and on this performance they are in with a great shout of making it through to the quarter-finals once again," he said.
