Llanelli seek Euro fortune
Wales skipper Scott Quinnell
Scott Quinnell leads an experienced Scarlets pack
Pool 3 | Llanelli v Glasgow | Stradey Park | Saturday 12 October | Kick-off 1430BST | Live on BBC Radio Wales and BBC Sport Online

Llanelli have vowed to make their own fortune in the Heineken Cup this season after their heart-breaking semi-final exit last year.

The Scarlets found themselves cruelly kicked out, quite literally, as Tim Stimpson's late 58-metre penalty bounced off bar, then post and finally over to hand eventual champions Leicester a 13-12 victory.

Nothing in their early Celtic League form has suggested that the west Walians are firing on all cylinders, but coach Gareth Jenkins admits he has taken a softly, softly approach.

"They're not rocking and rolling yet," Jenkins said, "but my focus has been trying to build momentum, build things into our game to arrive at a performance this Saturday.

"I think we're on track for that, but there's another level of rugby we've got to be playing at.

"We've got to be performing at a far better level than we have in recent weeks to be realistic contenders for topping the table."

Llanelli begin their European campaign at home to Glasgow on Saturday with every indication that the Scarlets are ready to move up through the gears.

Having out-psyched and out-played great rivals Swansea last Friday, destroying them 62-6 at Stradey Park, confidence is flowing.

The bodies missing in early season are also ready for duty, with the likes of Wales skipper Scott Quinnell fit and Ireland pair Guy and Simon Easterby back from international duty.

While Simon slots back into the backrow, brother Guy must be content with a place on the bench as Jenkins keeps faith with Dwayne Peel at scrum-half.

Despite Glasgow having had a good early season, the Scots - although tough to beat at home - could end up bottom of a very competitive Pool 3.

Bourgoin is also never an easy place to go and win, and they come off the back of a morale-boosting win over Biarritz in the French Championship for their visit to Sale.

The Sharks - who beat Pontypridd in the Parker Pen final last year - are sitting pretty near the top of the Zurich Premiership and have arguably the most potent backline in the competition.

The likes of Jason Robinson and Charlie Hodgson are focal points of a free-scoring backline that should see them and Llanelli challenge for control of the pool.

Yet while Llanelli should have more of a cutting edge behind the scrum themselves thanks to a fit Mark Jones and new recruit Matthew Watkins, it is up front where the Scarlets' power rests.

That veteran pack is led by Quinnell, who has been careful not to over-exert his troublesome knee before the European campaign begins.

"I'm ready," Quinnell said. "And hopefully we can make our own luck this year.

"We can take it up a step, we know what it is all about - it's very difficult and it's a great competition.

"The excitement is buzzing around Stradey again."

Glasgow welcome back skipper Jason White at lock, with Nathan Ross dropping to the bench.

Lee Harrison, back after a shoulder injury, and Cameron Blades replace Euan Murray and David Hilton as props from the side that lost to Borders last week.

In the backs, Graeme Beveridge replaces Andy Nicol at scrum-half, and Andy Henderson for Alan Bulloch at outside centre.
