Dublin handed Heineken final
Lansdowne Road in Dublin hosts rugby and football internationals
Lansdowne Road will stage the Heineken Cup final

Lansdowne Road has been chosen to host this season's Heineken Cup final in May 2003.

The Dublin stadium last hosted the climax to European rugby's elite competition in January 1999 when Ulster lifted the trophy with a 21-6 win over Colomiers.

"It means everyone knows where European club rugby's showpiece occasion will be staged," said Jean-Pierre Lux, chairman of the tournament organisers.

"From today all Heineken Cup roads lead to the Irish capital.

"In 1999 it was a magnificent, vibrant and special occasion and everyone is looking forward to a repeat of that on 24 May."

'Excellent opportunity'

Philip Browne, chief executive of the Irish Rugby Football Union, described it as fantastic news.

"It is sure to be a magnificent rugby weekend and memorable occasion," said Browne.

"Such a high profile event is an excellent opportunity both to promote the game in Ireland and the country itself."

Leicester will be bidding for their third successive European title.

The English champions begin the defence of their crown at Welsh club Neath on 11 October.

A total of 24 teams will again contest the tournament, including five tournament newcomers - Sale, London Irish, Bristol, Beziers and Viadana.
