| Monday, 9 December, 2002, 17:03 GMT Injury ends Sampson's season ![]() Sampson had hoped to play in next year's World Cup Wasps wing Paul Sampson is facing up to 12 months on the sidelines after learning he requires reconstructive surgery on his left knee. The winger sustained the injury while playing for England during the Dubai Sevens and he will not play another game this season. England sevens coach Joe Lydon said: "Our thoughts are with Paul and we wish him a speedy recovery." Northampton prospect Ben J Russell will join the England squad preparing for next weekend's tournament in George, South Africa, as replacement for Sampson. Lydon said: "Ben has also been called by the England Under-19 squad, but he will be back in time from South Africa to take part in their training session next week. "We are facing a tough group in South Africa in the shape of Australia, France and Namibia, but all of the players have learnt from the Dubai experience." | See also: 08 Dec 02 | European 08 Dec 02 | European 08 Dec 02 | European Top English stories now: Links to more English stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
