| Sunday, 8 December, 2002, 17:56 GMT Wasps set Parker Pen pace Parker Pen Challenge Cup round-up Sunday's games Wasps effectively booked their place in the third round of the Parker Pen Challenge Cup with a six-try demolition of Bordeaux-Begles.
Prop Craig Dowd scored Wasps' opening try in the 21st minute, before Lawrence Dallaglio, Simon Shaw, Mark van Gisbergen and Stuart Abbott also crossed. The Londoners were awarded a penalty try for an illegal tackle on stand-off Alex King, who kicked five conversions and a penalty. Saracens will also travel to France with high hopes after beating Colomiers 16-6 at Vicarage Road. And it could have been even better for the Watford side, as they were 16-0 up at half-time. But they failed to add to Darragh O'Mahony's try after the break and David Skrela threw Colomiers a lifeline with two late penalties. Saturday's games Simon Mason collected 17 points to give former club Newcastle a mountain to climb in next week's second leg.
Mason, who played for the Falcons in the 1990s, scored a try and kicked three conversions and two penalties. Newcastle, without the injured Jonny Wilkinson, looked to have limited their losses when a late try from Liam Botham made it 20-8. However, they conceded a third try four minutes into injury time and Mason converted from wide out to give Rob Andrew's side a huge task at Kingston Park next week. Harlequins have an even tougher struggle in the second leg of their tie against Stade Francais after being outclassed 26-0 at The Stoop.
Arthur Gomes and South African Brian Liebenberg scored tries for Stade, both of which were converted by Diego Dominguez. Borders lost 19-16 at Montauban after letting slip an 11-0 lead. The visitors scored tries through backs Scott Paterson and Jono Stuart, but two dropped goals from outside-half Sebastien Fauque proved crucial in the final quarter. Irish side Connacht crashed to a 42-27 defeat at Narbonne. Home full-back Pascal Bazani picked up a hat-trick of tries, while outside-half Jerome Gendre added 14 points. Connacht winger Wayne Munn went over twice and goal-kicker Eric Elwood added 12 points. |
