King's kick, the last move of the game, ensured two points for each side after Bath looked to have sealed an unlikely victory. At one stage, Wasps had held a 24-9 lead over their hosts at the Recreation Ground. But, in a remarkable turnaround, Dan Lyle looked to have done enough to overturn the deficit and take the win with a last-gasp try. A minute later, King looped over his kick ahead of referee Nigel Whitehouse's final whistle.
Neither side managed to make an impact for much of the opening 40 minutes as King and Chris Malone swapped penalties. But the game finally turned when Lyle was sent to the sin bin after being unfairly judged to have killed Wasps' possession with his side leading 6-3. The player advantage played into Wasps' hands as Lawrence Dallaglio produced a cross-field kick to the Bath try line. Josh Lewsey caught the ball and touched down. And the England back scored his second a matter of minutes later after a Mike Catt error in attack. Catt unleashed one of his trademark long passes which was intercepted by Shane Roiser. Roiser ran 50 metres upfield only to pull up just short of the line with a hamstring injury. But Lewsey was on hand to take the final pass and score under the posts.
The contest seemed virtually over 10 minutes after half-time when the visitors were awarded a penalty try. Rob Howley, in inspired form at the back of the Londoners' scrum, pierced through the opposition defence and laid on the ball to Phil Greening. The referee awarded the five points after deciding the England hooker was illegally prevented from taking the pass by Nathan Thomas. Bath eventually got into the game 20 minutes from time when Mike Tindall scored their first try of the Premiership season. And the boot of Malone, with the conversion and two penalties, cut the lead to two points with 10 minutes still left on the clock. The final say looked to be left to Lyle as he capped a sensational turnaround in his side's fortunes following a sensational breakthrough by Tom Voyce. But, as Wasps pushed upfield, King produced his late drop goal for the draw. Bath: Catt, Danielli, Maggs, Tindall, Voyce, Malone, Cooper, Barnes, Humphries, Galasso, Beattie, Grewcock, G.
