The Exiles had lost their opening two games of the season in contrast to Sarries' two wins. But tries from Barry Everitt, Paul Sackey, Ryan Strudwick and Kieron Dawson were enough to earn them five points at the Madejski Stadium. Saracens were a shadow of the side that had defeated Bristol and Bath, as Irish held a complete stranglehold throughout the encounter. Not even the sin-binning of Michael Horak could inspire the visitors as they defended resolutely, but ultimately struggled for possession.
Saracens started without full-back Thomas Castaignede and fly-half Andy Goode as part of coach Wayne Shelford's rotation policy. And their absence was immediately felt as some smooth handling between number eight Chris Sheasby and Pieter Rossouw paved the way for Everitt's try. The Exiles kicker added the conversion and a penalty but missed two further spot kicks to keep their opposition in touch. Everitt's brief mishaps, though, failed to halt his side's fluency and some adventurous passing was rewarded as Sackey collected his own kick ahead for the try of the afternoon. With the scores at 15-3 at the interval, a second Everitt penalty stretched the lead still further before try number three by Strudwick.
The bulky skipper forced his way through the opposition defence to put the game out of Saracens' reach. Despite holding a resounding lead, Irish continued to push for a fourth try and a bonus point. Saracens, to their credit, held firm until the final minute when Dawson, the Irish international flanker, gathered a loose ball and dived over the line following a 20-yard burst. Kevin Sorrell restored some pride a minute later and Goode, on as a substitute, converted with the final kick of the contest.
