Roberts sacked by Giants
Rob Roberts in action for Huddersfield Giants

Huddersfield Giants have terminated the contract of prop forward Rob Roberts.

The 24-year-old Wales international has been sacked for "internal disciplinary reasons".

Giants coach Tony Smith told BBC Radio Leeds: "I wish him well but these things happen in sport.

"Professional approaches have to be taken and unfortunately I have had to make this decision.

"I only do these things for the good of the team not for any other purpose".

Meanwhile, England Academy international Jon Wilkin will make his first appearance for Super League champions St Helens in their friendly at Barrow on Sunday.

The young second-rower, a close-season capture from Hull KR, will feature in a youthful Saints line-up as coach Ian Millward holds back the bulk of his big names.

Barnett arrives

Six other Super League clubs are also in friendly action on Sunday with Warrington playing Leigh and Widnes taking on Leeds in rearranged fixtures.

Australian Test centre Chris McKenna finally makes his debut for the Rhinos in Sunday's friendly at Halton Stadium.

Hull will play neighbours Hull KR for the Clive Sullivan Memorial Trophy in the first Humberside derby for three years.

Former New Zealand captain Richie Barnett, the club's high-profile capture from London Broncos, could play after arriving on Friday.

Rovers have not given up hope of signing 35-year-old former Castleford prop Dean Sampson, who announced his retirement at the end of last season.

Sampson failed an initial medical after injuring his back in a car crash just before Christmas but still hopes to prove his fitness and extend his remarkable career.
