Sculthorpe happy in league
Paul Sculthorpe will be 30 when his new contract ends
Sculthorpe could end his career with St Helens
Great Britain rugby league star Paul Sculthorpe says he was never tempted to follow Jason Robinson and Henry Paul into union.

The St Helens loose forward was attracting the interest of Leicester Tigers thanks to a string of top performances for both club and country.

But on Tuesday he dashed any hopes the English and European champions had of persuading him to swap codes by agreeing a new five-year contract with Saints.

If Saints are still winning trophies, then why move
Paul Sculthorpe

"I know there has been interest from Leicester but I couldn't see myself playing anything but league," Sculthorpe told BBC Sport Online.

"I have never played union, so it would be a totally new game. To be honest, I don't think I would enjoy it.

"I love what I am doing now, so why change?"

Sculthorpe, who was also a target for several NRL clubs in Australia, added there was every chance he would see out his career with St Helens.

"If Saints are still winning trophies, then why move? It is a great club and I am sure there are hundreds of players who would love to play for them," said the 25-year-old.

"I am not ruling anything out but I will be 30 when my contract finishes.

It was a great deal offered to me
Paul Sculthorpe

"Hopefully I will be as fit as ever and playing as well as I am now, so who knows what will happen?"

Sculthorpe also admitted the contract placed before him by Saints was too good to turn down.

"It was a great deal offered to me," said the Oldham-born player.

"It was good security for me and my family and it is a great move to stay at Saints."

Sculthorpe still had two years left on his current deal but St Helens were keen to hold on to the one of their top players.

"It is great that the club wanted to tie me down on a long-term deal," said the 2001 Man of Steel.

"It is a brilliant feeling to be thought of so highly by a club like Saints."
