Halifax star in anxious wait

Andrew Brocklehurst
Brocklehurst was sent off for fighting against Leeds
Halifax teenager Andrew Brocklehurst may be forced to pull out of the England squad for next month's World Sevens.

The 19-year-old second rower was handed a four-match ban at the end of last season after being sent off for fighting in an Academy game against Leeds.

But he was thought to have completed his suspension by sitting out England A's three-match tour of the South Pacific and Halifax's pre-season friendly against Salford.

But club officials are unsure whether the win over the Reds on 29 December counts and are anxiously awaiting news from the Rugby Football League.

Brocklehurst was named in a 10-man squad for the tournament in Sydney.

England selectors had called up five Great Britain internationals, including Andy Farrell, Lee Gilmour, Keith Senior, Danny Orr and Richard Horne.

We feel this England squad will be capable of testing any team

David Waite
National head coach

The side will be coached by Wigan assistant Mike Gregory, with Phil Clarke acting as manager.

National head coach David Waite said: "We feel this England squad is both quality and well balanced and will be capable of testing any team competing in the World Sevens tournament.

"Working within the selection criteria of one player per club, we have a group which contains five Great Britain players and an England 'A' teamer .

"The squad also contains a Lancashire Origin representative and players with top level Tetley's Super League experience."

Waite added: "With the appointment of Mike Gregory, we are delighted to be able to recognise an up-and-coming talent from within the high performance coaching group."

Gregory's squad will fly to Australia on 26 January to prepare for the tournament, which takes place on 1-2 February.

England squad:

Andrew Brocklehurst (Halifax)
Phil Cantillon (Widnes Vikings)
Gareth Ellis (Wakefield Trinity Wildcats)
Andrew Farrell (Wigan Warriors)
Lee Gilmour (Bradford Bulls)
Richard Horne (Hull FC)
Danny Orr (Castleford Tigers)
Keith Senior (Leeds Rhinos)
Rob Smyth (Warrington Wolves)
