| Monday, 4 November, 2002, 15:40 GMT GB player profiles Paul Anderson
Bradford Bulls After earning his place in England's World Cup squad, Anderson is now a Great Britain regular and played in all three of last year's Tests against Australia. Bulls coach Brian Noble often calls for the giant prop to make an impact off the bench. It is likely that Britain will use his skills to the same effect. Gary Connolly
Wigan Warriors Connolly has played at the top level over the last decade and will bring great experience to the back line. With first choice full-backs Kris Radlinski and Paul Wellens out injured, Connolly will be hoping for one last hurrah before switching codes at the end of the season. Keiron Cunningham
St Helens Cunningham was the only British player named in the world team of 2001 and hooker is the one position that GB coach David Waite barely has to think about when the Welshman is fit. A dynamic player who was sorely missed for last year's Ashes, Cunningham also missed Wales' Test with the Kiwis with a recurrence of a hand injury. Paul Deacon
Bradford Bulls In the past, Deacon has made more of an impact on the international stage than he has at his club. But following a magnificent season with Bradford that included 336 points in 29 appearances, Deacon is the form scrum-half of the moment. A superb organiser with an excellent kicking game, Deacon has also added "taking on the opposition" to his repertoire. Andrew Farrell
Wigan Warriors Farrell is the heart and soul of the Great Britain team and leads from the front. After making his Wigan debut at 16, an international call-up came two years later and by the age of 21 he was captaining his country. Capable of scything defences in two with a devastating burst of speed or a well-timed pass. Stuart Fielden
Bradford Bulls The competitive prop was named in the 2002 Super League Dream Team after a series of impressive displays for his club. Toured Down Under in 1999 with Great Britain and was outstanding for the Lions in last year's Test series against Australia. Mike Forshaw
Bradford Bulls Forshaw is back in the Lions squad after returning from international retirement for last year's Ashes series. A dependable presence whether in attack or defence, Forshaw is renowned for his phenomenal work rate and consistency. Lee Gilmour
Bradford Bulls Gilmour is a versatile member of David Waite's squad, equally at home in the back row as well as the three-quarters. Named in the Lions squad for July's disastrous visit to Australia, Gilmour is still waiting to win his first cap. Martin Gleeson
St Helens Gleeson has shot to prominence with the Saints this season following his move from Huddersfield at the end of last year. The England under-21 international has great pace and an eye for a gap in the opposition's defence. Richard Horne
Hull FC Another player who could benefit from the withdrawal of Radlinski and Wellens, many believe full-back is Horne's best position. The 20-year-old, a former Young Player of the Year, is considered one of the most talented young players in the northern hemisphere and provides Great Britain with plenty of options. Chris Joynt
St Helens Joynt, like Andy Farrell, is a born leader who provides a wealth of experience. The Saints captain never takes a backward step and often chips in with a valuable try. Joynt celebrated a decade at Saints earlier this season and was a vital component of his club's Grand Final triumph. Barrie McDermott
Leeds Rhinos McDermott is the old man of the GB squad, but is regarded as one of the hardest men in rugby league and is one of the players New Zealand will fear most. A formidable sight going forward, his power, pace and aggression will ensure he will be a marked man. Adrian Morley
Sydney Roosters Morley's form at the back-end of the season saw him play a key role in the Roosters' NRL Grand Final winning campaign. A succession of injuries have deprived GB of Morley's services since 1999, but when fit he will be one of the first names on Waite's team-sheet. Terry O'Connor
Wigan Warriors Famed for his whole-hearted attitude and combative nature, the Irish captain will be an able lieutenant on the pitch and off it. O'Connor impressed players and commentators alike with his perceptive and authoritative leadership of Ireland at the 2000 World Cup. Danny Orr
Castleford Tigers Orr is one of Super League's brightest young stars and was named in the 2002 Super League Dream Team following another impressive season. A prolific point scorer and good all-round kicker, Orr only missed out on the Great Britain Ashes squad through injury. Jamie Peacock
Bradford Bulls The giant second row is one of the key performers in the forwards for the Bulls, having come through the club's junior ranks. Peacock looks set to be a mainstay of the Super League outfit and, potentially, Great Britain, although he may be restricted to a replacement's role. Karl Pratt
no club Pratt has struggled to command a starting spot at Leeds but earned his place in the GB squad with his displays in the Origin Series. Can play in a number of positions but more at home on the wing. Leon Pryce
Bradford Bulls Pryce represented Great Britain for the first time in last year's Test series against Australia following a meteoric rise through the ranks. Voted Young Player of the Year in 1999, the Bradford winger is tipped to become a major international star. Paul Sculthorpe
St Helens Sculthorpe confirmed his status as one of the greats of the modern game by retaining the Man of Steel award. The 25-year-old played a major roll in Saints' Grand Final winning campaign, and Great Britain fans will be hoping for more of the same. Keith Senior
Leeds Rhinos Senior's combination of pace and power make him one of the most feared centres in the world. Could be the player to cause the Kiwi defence the most problems. Has searing pace and an eye for the tryline. Kevin Sinfield
Leeds Rhinos Sinfield gives David Waite another option after playing so well at stand-off for Leeds. Normally a loose forward, he has formed a fantastic half-back partnership with Ryan Sheridan at club level but will probably have to settle for a place on the bench. Chev Walker
Leeds Rhinos Walker was promoted to the GB squad following his try-scoring performance for England 'A' in their 34-12 defeat by the Kiwis. The Leeds centre has been a regular for his club since making his debut as a 16-year-old and played in all five games for England in the 2000 World Cup. |
