Waite defends GB preparations
GB coach David Waite
Eight players are unavailable to Waite through injury

Great Britain coach David Waite is confident that his team's lack of preparation will not hinder their chances in next month's Test series against New Zealand.

The Great Britain squad fly out to La Manga, Spain, on Wednesday morning for a five-day training camp ahead of the first Test on 9 November.

The Kiwis will have played five warm-up matches by the time the sides meet - including games against Australia and Super League champions St Helens.

The Lions' only practice matches will come against the Under-18 national team.

But Waite is unconcerned by claims that his squad are going into the three-game series ill-prepared.

"You have to deal with the situation that is presented to you and make the best of that," Waite told BBC Sport Online.

"I don't get frustrated because I knew what the calendar was. If I was to let that worry me we would be in all sorts of trouble.

"We had a good preparation going into the Ashes last year, but things have been affected this year by a later start because of the club fixtures.

"We're obviously at a disadvantage. But there's no time in the calendar for us to keep playing football. The majority of these guys have played 40 games this year.

"What we need to do in that period is prepare to play, and I'm sure by the time 9 November comes round we'll be ready."

Great Britain's preparations have also been hit by a series of injuries to key players, with Kris Radlinksi, Paul Wellens and Sean Long among eight players unavailable for selection.

"That's the game we play. If you play Test match football at the end of long seasons you are never going to get the top 17 through unscathed," said Waite.

"New Zealand are not at full strength either. That's just the game of rugby league.

"I am fully confident about the quality of the players that we have representing Great Britain."
