Sharks bring down Eagles
Cronulla's Matthew Riek celebrates his try against the Northern Eagles
Cronulla's Matthew Riek celebrates one of his tries

Cronulla came from behind to beat the Northern Eagles 46-24 in Australia's National Rugby League on Sunday.

The Sharks were 18-0 down at half-time but three tries in the opening minutes of the second half put them on course for a victory which takes them to fifth in the overall standings.

Full-back David Peachey and winger Matthew Rieck scored two tries each while prop Chris Beattie scored his first try of the season for Cronulla.

Defending champions Newcastle also began slowly, trailing bottom-of-the-table Penrith at half-time before eventually winning 38-22.

In Auckland, the New Zealand Warriors beat the Parramatta Eels 26-10.

On Saturday, the Brisbane Broncos scored eight tries as they thrashed the Wests Tigers 46-14.

The Broncos' win means they stay in second place in the NRL standings behind the Bulldogs, who won their 15th game in a row on Friday.

The defeat completed a miserable day for the coachless Tigers, who were also turned down by Brisbane performance director Craig Bellamy.

Try blitz

Brisbane led 28-2 at half-time after scoring four tries in 11 minutes.

St George Illawarra dismissed South Sydney in similar fashion, winning 48-10 in a one-sided game.

The Dragons moved to within one point of the top eight after a performance their coach Andrew Farrar described as "businesslike" against a very poor South Sydney defence.

The Canberra Raiders, who beat NRL champions Newcastle last week, lost to the lowly-ranked North Queensland Cowboys.

The 34-18 defeat threatens the Raiders' hopes of securing a finals berth.

On Friday, the Bulldogs overcame a spate of injuries against the Sydney Roosters to extend their winning streak to 15 games.

The leaders were forced to play for most of the second half with only one man on the four-man interchange bench because of injuries but still ran out 24-12 winners.

We seemed to be tackling that whole second half
Bulldogs coach
Steve Foulkes

"It was a really gutsy effort," Bulldogs coach Steve Foulkes said. "We have won a lot of games this year because we have played open, attractive football.

"Today we won for a different reason which is really pleasing.

"We seemed to be tackling that whole second half. We had trouble because we were chasing our tails for the second half."

The Bulldogs suffered injuries to Travis Norton (bicep), centre Willie Talau (shoulder joint), Glen Hughes (hamstring) and Adam Perry (ankle).

The Roosters closed to within four points early in the second half when hooker Craig Wing ran off a short ball from Shannon Hegarty to score under the posts.

But the Bulldogs sealed the win when Brent Sherwin's cross-field kick found winger Hazem El Masri, who crossed for the try.
