Third seed Marko Pusa and 1999 champion Ted Hankey both crashed out of the Embassy World Darts Championship.

But second seed Martin Adams stayed on course with victory over Steve 'Magic' Coote, while Bob 'The Bear' Taylor reached the last eight for the first time, beating Co Stompe.

Hankey, the seventh seed, was one of the favourites for the title after the downfall of 2001 champion John 'Boy' Walton.

'The Count' looked well on his way to victory when he stormed into a two set lead, both with 3-0 scorelines.

But Jones took the third, and then brought himself level by winning the fourth, checking out on 121 in leg four and 80 in leg five.

A shell-shocked Hankey recovered in the decider to register a 180 in the first leg but it was not enough to stop a rampant Jones who reeled off the next three legs.

Jones' previous best performance had been the last sixteen in 2001.

Finland's Pusa crashed out 3-1 to Australian haemophiliac Tony David.

The world number three was never really in contention against David, who cannot straighten his throwing arm.

"Everything's going well for me here and I'm glad it's all slotting into place," said 34-year-old Queenslander David.

"I've visualised myself winning the tournament. I'm oozing with confidence and my destiny is in my own hands - that's the great thing about darts."

Second seed Adams came through 3-1 despite losing the first set to Bolton fireman Coote.

"Steve came out with all guns blazing in the first set, but I got my act together and I was very pleased with my performance," said England captain Adams, from Peterborough.

"I hit 140s and 180s and my finishing was clean. I can now have a right good drink tonight and then have a day's rest before my match against Wayne."

Earlier Scotland's Bob Taylor reached the quarter-finals for the first time in his career with a 3-1 win over Dutchman Co Stompe.

'The Bear' confessed that his previous record at the Championship had been "disastrous" having only once got past the first round, but he was in convincing form against Stompe.

The 41-year-old, who now lives in Sweden, moved into a 2-1 lead without breaking the throw of the Dutchman dubbed 'The Matchstick'.

Taylor took the darts off Stompe at just the right time early in the fourth set and overcame a rare blip on double top to wrap up his success.

"This is definitely my best win in the Embassy and I'm just overwhelmed," said Taylor.

"Everyone expected me to go out in the first round again but I'm confident of going a lot further than this."
