A record prize of 48,000 will go to the player who can go unbeaten over eight nerve-wracking days in front of thousands of hardened fans and millions of armchair viewers.

Second best will go home 24,000 to the good and even the losing semi-finalists will have their bank balances boosted by more than 10,000 as sponsors Imperial Tobacco raise the stakes at the Lakeside.

Paul Lim, then representing Singapore, won 52,000 in 1990 with the only Embassy finals nine-darter to date.

The feat, said to be more difficult than snooker's 147 clearance, is worth the same sum to the first person checking out with nine arrows in this year's event.
