Tony McCoy returned to winning ways in the final race of day one at Aintree, riding Classified to victory in the 1720.

McCoy had managed just one top-three finish on Thursday, riding Cyfor Malta to second spot in the main event, the Martell Cup Chase Showcase.

But he and Classified proved too strong for favourite Eternal Spring, which was ridden into second place.

Boneyarrow completed the top three, with Ruby Walsh on board.

Norman Williamson and Spring Margot held off the spirited challenge of Harvis to win the penultimate race of the day.

Harvis, at 16-1, upset the pre-race billing with second place. Richard Guest, meanwhile, rode Mr Bossman into third.

A dismal day continued for Tony McCoy, whose ride, the favourite L'Epicurien, struggled to keep in the hunt.

1620 BST Martell XO Anniversary 4YO Novices' Hurdle

Jonjo O'Neill claimed his second win of the day as Quazar pulled ahead of Abbot in the final stages.

Quazar and Abbot came over the final fence neck and neck but jockey Tony Dobbin pushed his mount sufficiently to cross the line two lengths clear.

The third-placed runner was Newhall.

Tony McCoy failed to continue his good form of the season to date despite leading in the early stages. His ride, Londoner, petered out as the horses came into the straight.

Polly Gundry rode Torduff Express to first place over the fences for Saturday's Grand National to beat off National hopeful Gunner Welburn and the rest of the 30-horse field.

Mulkev Prince led for much of the event, open only to amateur jockeys, but Torduff Express leapt into the lead with four fences remaining.

Gunner Welburn, which had been due to run in Saturday's race, pulled close with just two fences remaining but did not have the speed to match.

The race favourite had to make do with second. Son of Anshan was third.

Dark 'n Sharp matched its billing as race favourite by romping to victory in the Martell Red Rum Handicap.

All 15 runners had been recalled after an initial false start but, at the second time of asking, Lord York headed to the front of the pack, guided by jockey Paul Carberry.

But, despite coming out in front at the start of the straight, Carberry could not maintain the advantage as Dark 'n Sharp snuck up on the inside to finish nine lengths clear.

Lord York was second while Glenelly Gale was third.

Florida Pearl powered to victory in the day's biggest race with a dozen-length victory over Cyfor Malta.

Ridden by Barry Geraghty, the 5-2 shot took the lead for the first time at the start of the second circuit.

And from there, he was rarely troubled, with Cyfor Malta and Tony McCoy some distance back in second place.

Race favourite Lord Noelie, one of the backmarkers throughout much of the Martell Cup Chase Showcase, finished strongly for third.

1400 BST Martell Handicap Hurdle

Sudden Shock lived up to its title as the 33-1 outsider raced away to a convincing win in the opening race at Aintree.

Trained by Jonjo O'Neill, John Kavanagh set the standard on board for much of the way before holding off the threat of second place Iris Royal and Freetown, which was third.

Montreal, ridden by champion jockey Tony McCoy, failed to keep up with the pace and fell away in the latter stages.

The day's racing was preceded by a minute's silence in honour of the Queen Mother.
