Jim Culloty capped a marvellous season with a thrilling victory on the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained Bindaree.

The Irishman, who only picked up the ride days ago when intended jockey Jamie Goldstein broke his leg, added the Aintree feature to the Cheltenham Gold Cup he won last month.

Bindaree took up the running from several fences out but it seemed he would have to settle for second when Richard Johnson on What's Up Boys overtook him on the run-in.

But Culloty didn't panic despite having to contend with a loose horse and his horse fought back to clinch victory.

A Martin Pipe victory usually means a Tony McCoy winner but the champion jockey was on the wrong horse in the Martell Aintree Hurdle.

Instead Ruby Walsh picked up a winning spare ride on Ilnamar.

The six-year-old timed his run well to beat Grimes, who had led from almost start to finish.

It Takes Time ran on strongly to clinch third place.

1420 BST Martell Maghull Novices' Chase

Timmy Murphy survived a stewards' inquiry to win the first chase of the day on Armaturk.

Murphy held off a sustained challenge from Tony McCoy on Seebald from the home turn but the stewards considered the possibility that Armaturk had interfered with his rival before the last obstacle.

But the incident was deemed not to affected the outcome of the race and Murphy, on the more fancied of the two Paul Nicholls horses in the field, was allowed to keep the race.

A five-horse field had been reduced to just four when outsider Venn Ottery fell at the first.

Trainer Jonjo O'Neill picked up the opening race for the third day in a row - and his fourth winner of the meeting.

Liam Cooper gave Intersky Falcon a superb and patient ride as the five-year-old came home 15 lengths clear.

Benbyas and Golden Alpha led the field off at a hectic gallop for the first circuit and a half.

But they paid the price as Intersky Falcon, which had been handily placed throughout moved to the front three hurdles from home as the early leaders faded.

From then on, there was little doubt as Cooper steered his mount home for one of the easiest wins of the meeting.
