| Jockey Club concern at 'fixing' probe Wintle saddled Blasket Sound at Stratford The BBC is to continue an investigation into alleged corruption in racing amid concerns from The Jockey Club at reported "aggressive tactics" used by programme makers. A meeting requested by the Jockey Club has been convened on Tuesday with representatives of the Panorama programme, which is investigating alleged race fixing. The move comes in the wake of a reported incident last Friday night when a film crew were ejected from Stratford racecourse. According to the Racing Post, a scuffle broke out when the crew approached trainer David Wintle and accused him of fixing races.
Clerk of the course Stephen Lambert was called and the camera crew were eventually thrown out. That incident was believed to have been caused by a team working on the investigative BBC series Kenyon Confronts. But the Jockey Club is also keen to meet Panorama bosses after they apparently attempted to interrogate another trainer, Gay Kelleway, last Thursday, which led to her calling the police. "Panorama has been carrying out an investigation into horse racing for several months, which will undoubtedly contain new relevations," a spokesperson said. The programme is expected to be broadcast in "early summer", and contain potentially damaging material examining "the integrity of the sport over a long period of time." Jockey Club spokesman John Maxse confirmed the governing body would be meeting Panorama representatives to discuss the alleged incidents.
"They are keen to see us and we are keen to see them because we are concerned about certain areas related to the methods they have been employing," he said. "They have admitted to me that they visited Gay Kelleway, but we have had no contact at all with Kenyon Confronts." Maxse added: "It shouldn't be a great surprise that people are trying to make programmes linking criminal activity to racing. In the past we know there have been links." The Racing Post report claims that a "widely respected northern trainer" was earlier accused of having a 'non-loser' account with a bookmaker. Recalling Friday's incident, Wintle told the paper: "I was leaving the parade ring when these people approached and pushed a camera and microphone in my face and shouted: 'You have fixed races, Mr Wintle. That is right, isn't it? You have fixed races.'" Wintle says he did not respond and was pursued to the Tote Credit office, where the crew tried to film him through a window before being asked to leave. Lambert, the clerk of the course, added: "There was a little scuffle in which one of the crew was left sitting on the ground as Mr Wintle sought refuge in the Tote Credit office." |
