Superleague win Ahearne Trophy

London Knights captain Ian Macintyre
London Knights captain Ian Macintyre lifts the Ahearne Trophy

Wins for two Superleague sides on Saturday ensured Great Britain's victory over Norway in the Ahearne Trophy with two games to spare.

Despite Valerengen Vikings' 3-1 win against Bracknell Bees, Sheffield Steelers' 5-1 win over Storhamar Dragons and Belfast Giants' 5-4 victory against Frisk Tigers gave Britain the points they needed.

Great Britain were defeated 6-4 by the German Elite League in last season's Ahearne Trophy competition.

Former NHL forward Iain Fraser marked his Sheffield debut by recording two assists. Steelers romped into a 4-0 lead after 40 minutes.

First period goals from Warren Norris and Kent Simpson (short-handed) were followed by second period strikes by Marc Laniel and Scott Levins.

Veteran Rick Brebant capitalised on the powerplay at 45:27 before Christian Arntsen hit a late consolation.

Belfast followed up their 3-0 win over Trondheim Panthers on Friday with a close victory over Frisk.

The Superleague leaders stormed ahead in the opening period. Shane Johnson, Colin Ward and Todd Kelman all beat goalie Vidar Wold in the first 20 minutes.

The Norwegians found their rhythm in the second period, though, and drew level with Belfast with six minutes remaining.

Despite working hard to get back into the game, Frisk could grasp the winning goal.

At 54:42 Paxton Schulte put the game beyond reach and brought the Ahearne Trophy back to Britain.

Saturday's results made the outcomes of the final two Ahearne Trophy games academic.

Bracknell Bees and London Knights brought the competition to a close by beating Frisk Tigers and Valerengen Vikings 5-2 and 3-2 respectively.

In Sunday's only league game, Sheffield Steelers returned to the top of the table by beating fierce rivals Nottingham Panthers 4-2.

Kent Simpson put Steelers ahead after 39 seconds but ISL top scorer Lee Jinman tied up the game at 6:01.

Former NHL forward Iain Fraser restored Sheffield's lead less than a minute later with his first goal for Steelers.

Scott Levins tallied shortly after the re-start and added a second on the powerplay at 36:51.

Marc Hussey narrowed the gap in the 54th minute but Sheffield held on for the win.

Elsewhere, Fife forward Jonathan Weaver was on target and goaltender Joe Watkins turned in a superb display of netminding as Great Britain drew 1-1 with Italy after overtime in their Euro Challenge clash in Austria.
