| Monday, 9 December, 2002, 11:57 GMT GAA players await new deal ![]() Jarlath Burns is chairman of the Players' Committee GAA footballers and hurlers are in line to get much better mileage rates in 2003. Gaelic games are strictly amateur, but players are paid travelling expenses along with other benefits. However, with major GAA fixtures drawing big attendances, players have been seeking better treatment. In Cork, the senior county footballers and hurlers are currently on strike in an attempt to get an improved deal. The Players' Committee is proposing an increase in the mileage rate from 38 to 60 cent for players in the Republic of Ireland. Central funding Those in Northern Ireland stand to get 50 pence instead of the current rate of 30 pence per mile. The last increase was in August 2000 and at that time some county boards complained that it placed too big a burden on their resources. Similar protests are expected this time round but, according to reports, central funding might be made available by the GAA authorities at Croke Park. The decision on new rates will be considered by the Gaelic Athletic Association's Central Council early in 2003. | See also: 08 Dec 02 | N Ireland 04 Dec 02 | N Ireland 03 Dec 02 | N Ireland Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top N Ireland stories now: Links to more N Ireland stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
