The Tyrone champions thoroughly deserved their success. Their slick forward play ran the Cross defence ragged and in truth, Errigal should have won the match by more. It all looked very different early on with Crossmaglen making a fast start to lead by 1-1 to 0-0 after six minutes. James Hughes hit Cross' goal after the Errigal Ciaran defence had appeared to hesitate. But with Canavan lively and early substitute Darragh Tierney hitting two marvellous points, Errigal were on terms by the 15th minute.
Canavan's running was causing the Cross defence all sorts of problems while Rory McCann ensured a nightmare afternoon for the Armagh champions' usually reliable full-back Donal Murtagh. McCann's second point of the match put Errigal Ciaran ahead in the 16th minute and it was a lead which the Tyrone champions never relinquished. Canavan's superb 18th minute goal put further daylight between the teams with the finish absolutely superb. Crossmaglen were held scoreless for a 20 minute period in the first half with John McEntee finally finding the target two minutes from the interval. Errigal Ciaran led 1-8 to 1-4 at the interval but if anything, their dominance increased in the third quarter. By the 45th minute, the Tyrone side's lead had increased to 1-12 to 1-6 with the excellent Mark Harte and Canavan both having hit two points. With Oisin McConville, despite his five points, struggling in open play, the introduction of young forward Michael McNamee gave something of a boost to the south Armagh side. The schoolboy looked set to hit a crucial goal in the 49th minute but Errigal goalkeeper John Devine produced a magnificent save. Ballinderry meeting Canavan's afternoon was probably best encapsulated by his marvellous free off the outside of his right boot from the sideline in the 52nd minute. Crossmaglen did rally in the final six minutes - without ever really looking like they would pull back the deficit. McNamee struck a snapshot across the face of goal in the 54th minute while John McEntee and Oisin McConville scores left three points between the teams as the match went into injury-time. But anything other than an Errigal Ciaran victory would have been a travesty and Mickey Harte's side held on to earn a semi-final meeting with Ballinderry next weekend. Other provincial club games |
