Armagh to the fore
Benny Tierney is one of the great characters in modern day gaelic football
Benny Tierney fails to make All-Star selection
No fewer than nine players from the Armagh's victorious All-Ireland championship-winning side are among this season's Vodafone All Star nominations.

All told there are 17 Ulster players on the 45-man list with four from Donegal, three from Tyrone and Raymond Gallagher the lone representative from Fermanagh.

But there is no spot for Armagh's goalkeeper Benny Tierney who will retire without achieving an All-Star accolade.

The popular Tierney is extremely unlucky to miss out after he did little wrong in Armagh's gallop to the Sam Maguire.

However, the competition was strong as Kerry's Declan O'Keeffe and Stephen Cluxton from Dublin were automatic choices.

Edging out Tierney for the third goalkeeping place was Cork's Kevin O'Dwyer.

Armagh, though, will be happy enough with their lot having secured one more spot than Kerry with Dublin having six nominations.

The Armagh nine are Enda McNulty, Aidan O'Rourke, Kieran McGeeney, Paul McGrane, Oisin McConville, Stephen McDonnell, Ronan Clarke, John McEntee and Diarmaid Marsden.

The Orchard County could finish with at least five All Stars, while Clarke is in the running for the Young Player of the Year Award.

Donegal's quartet of Kevin Cassidy, John Gildea, Michael Hegarty and Adrian Sweeney are in the hat, while Tyrone have Peter Canavan, Chris Lawn and Brian Robinson.

The final selection will be announced on Thursday, 28 November.
