Ferrari complete the set
The two Ferraris lead David Coulthard and the rest at the start
Schumacher leads away at the start

Michael Schumacher handed first place in the United States Grand Prix to team-mate Rubens Barrichello on the line after a display of Ferrari superiority at Indianapolis.

Schumacher led throughout the race, with Barrichello close behind, but the world champion backed off in the last corner and allowed the Brazilian to win by 0.01 seconds.

Schumacher said he was trying to engineer a dead heat, but either result would have secured second in the drivers' championship for Barrichello, achieving Ferrari's final ambition for the season.

David Coulthard was third for McLaren, fighting off a strong challenge from a flying Juan Pablo Montoya in the closing laps.

Earlier in the race, Coulthard had only just failed to get among the Ferraris by doing a one-stop strategy compared with the two employed by the Italian team.

McLaren's tactics almost paid off - but the Ferrari drivers managed to rejoin the track after their first stops just ahead of the Scot.

Ferrari had to keep an eye out for Coulthard

Coulthard followed close behind the Ferraris, but did not have quite enough speed to get on terms before his own single stop.

The race between the Ferraris was also close.

Barrichello tracked his team-mate throughout the afternoon at Indianapolis, but he was never close enough to try to pass Schumacher, who handled the traffic better.

The Ferrari team had allowed their drivers to race for one of the few occasions this season.

Montoya put in a strong performance after being delayed by a tangle with team-mate Ralf Schumacher at the start of the second lap.

The Colombian led home Renault driver Jarno Trulli, who put in his third impressive race performance in a row, and Jacques Villeneuve in the much-improved BAR.

Montoya had been lucky to survive the collision with Ralf Schumacher without more serious damage.

Montoya, who had qualified ahead of Schumacher, was beaten away from the line by the German.

But the Colombian was determined to get back in front and challenged Schumacher into the first turn at the start of lap two.

The two went into the first corner side by side, but Schumacher, on the inside, spun into Montoya.

The light impact knocked off Schumacher's rear wing and put Montoya briefly off the road.

Schumacher was forced to pit for a new wing, rejoining last and more than a lap behind, while Montoya dropped down to seventh, behind Trulli, Raikkonen and Villeneuve.

Montoya was able to battle back, passing Raikkonen when the Finn slowed with an engine problem early on and then Trulli and Villeneuve during the pit stops.

He then closed quickly on Coulthard in the last 10 laps, but was unable to get quite close enough to challenge the Scot before the end of the race.

Villeneuve showed well in the BAR, putting in the team's most competitive showing for some time.

The 1997 world champion's two-stop strategy allowed him to race in the top six for the first part of the race.

The Canadian was heading for a finish just out of the points but he was promoted to sixth when Raikkonen's engine failed with 22 laps to go.
