1 Barrichello Major incidents (All times BST): Lap 73: Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello go side by side as they cross the line. But the engineered finish goes wrong as Barrichello strays fractionally in front despite having trailed his team-mate for the entire race. The Brazilian is handed victory by 0.01 seconds, clinching second place overall in the drivers' standings. McLaren's David Coulthard comfortably holds off Juan Pablo Montoya's Williams to take third. Jarno Trulli is fifth for Renault and Jacques Villeneuve sixth in the BAR. Lap 72: Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello are nicely in formation as they prepare to take the chequered flag for another Ferrari one-two. Lap 71: Juan Pablo Montoya has the gap to third-placed David Coulthard down to 3.8 seconds but looks to have left his charge too late. Lap 69: The gap between David Coulthard and Juan Pablo Montoya is down to 4.1 seconds as the race looks set for some late excitement. Michael Schumacher is well on the way to victory in his Ferrari. Lap 68: Juan Pablo Montoya is now in sight of David Coulthard's McLaren and in with a chance of a podium place. Lap 66: Fourth-placed Juan Pablo Montoya has eaten into David Coulthard's advantage and reduces it to 5.2 seconds with seven laps to go. Michael Schumacher is now comfortably ahead of Ferrari team-mate Rubens Barrichello and looks set for his 11th victory of the season. Lap 62: Eddie Irvine is locked in a battle with Nick Heidfeld for ninth place as the top six looks set to stay the same to the finish. Lap 60: Juan Pablo Montoya is lapping fastest but there is still a nine-second gap between his Williams and the McLaren of David Coulthard. Lap 58: David Coulthard is closing slightly on Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello, who appear to be driving comfortably within themselves. Lap 55: The battle between Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello appears to have lost its intensity as the Ferraris head for yet another one-two. Lap 52: Rubens Barrichello is performing well on new tyres as he again closes the gap on leader Michael Schumacher. Lap 51: Kimi Raikkonen retires in the McLaren while running in sixth place after his engine appears to blow up. Heinz-Harald Frentzen makes a trip into the gravel but manages to make his way back on to the circuit. Lap 50: Rubens Barrichello pits one lap after Michael Schumacher and rejoins the race behind his Ferrari team-mate. Lap 49: Michael Schumacher makes his second and final pit stop, allowing Rubens Barrichello one lap to try to gain an advantage. Lap 48: Alex Yoong's Minardi retires in a puff of smoke after his engine blows out going into turn one. Lap 47: Michael Schumacher has extended his lead to 2.9 seconds over Rubens Barrichello after making better progress through the backmarkers. Lap 45: Ralf Schumacher, who is 18th and last after his early collision with team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya, makes his first official pit stop. Lap 43: McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen comes in for his first stop from third place. He has a longer stop than team-mate David Coulthard of 12.9 seconds and resumes in sixth, promoting Juan Pablo Montoya to fourth. Lap 42: David Coulthard makes his first stop. The McLaren team send him out in 10.8 seconds as he rejoins the race in fourth place. Lap 41: Mark Webber retires in the Minardi after picking up a steering problem. Lap 39: David Coulthard, who is on a one-stop strategy and has yet to pit, tries to keep up with Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello. The Ferraris are on a two-stop strategy and still have their second stops to come. Lap 37: Giancarlo Fisichella's Jordan pits from fifth place, allowing Nick Heidfeld and Juan Pablo Montoya to move up. Lap 36: David Coulthard closes up on the Ferraris of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello as they carve through the traffic. Lap 35: Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello encounter thick traffic as they continue their battle for the lead. Once again it works to the benefit of Schumacher. Lap 34: Jacques Villeneuve cruises past Jarno Trulli to snatch seventh place. Lap 33: Juan Pablo Montoya comes in for his first stop, rejoining in sixth in front of the battle between Jarno Trulli and Jacques Villeneuve. Lap 31: Rubens Barrichello launches his most determined attack yet on leader Michael Schumacher, moving to within four car lengths. Lap 29: Pedro De La Rosa's Jaguar is the first car to retire. Lap 28: Jarno Trulli pits from fourth place. A 12-second stop suggests he may also be on a one-stop strategy. Lap 27: Rubens Barrichello comes into the pits from the lead and has an eight-second stop. Normal service is resumed as Barrichello comes out in second, behind Ferrari team-mate Michael Schumacher. David Coulthard, who looks to be on a one-stop strategy, is still third. Lap 26: Michael Schumacher comes into the pits for the first of his two stops. He is out after eight seconds, allowing him to resume in front of third-placed David Coulthard. Lap 25: Jacques Villeneuve looks to be on a two-stop strategy as his BAR pits from fifth place, exiting in 9.4 seconds. Lap 24: Rubens Barrichello shows his frustration with the backmarkers as the gap to leader Michael Schumacher extends to 2.6 seconds. Lap 23: Michael Schumacher sets a new lap record while cutting through backmarkers. Eddie Irvine holds up Rubens Barrichello's Ferrari to allow Schumacher to edge clear. Lap 22: Olivier Panis is the first driver to pit as he brings his BAR in for its first stop. Lap 21: Backmarkers come into play in the battle for the lead as Michael Schumacher passes his brother Ralf, who is two laps down after his early collision with Juan Pablo Montoya. Lap 20: The engine of Kimi Raikkonen's McLaren appears to be misfiring and he is losing a second a lap to sixth-placed Juan Pablo Montoya. Lap 19: Rubens Barrichello sets the fastest lap of the race so far in his Ferrari as he continues to put pressure on leader Michael Schumacher. Lap 18: Eddie Irvine steers his Jaguar past Mark Webber's Minardi to take 16th place. Lap 17: Juan Pablo Montoya is roaring back into contention after his early shunt with team-mate Ralf Schumacher, taking Kimi Raikkonen's McLaren to move into the points. Lap 16: BAR's Jacques Villeneuve passes Kimi Raikkonen's McLaren to move into fifth place. Lap 14: Leader Michael Schumacher clocks a time of 1:13.9 in his Ferrari for his fastest lap of the race so far. Olivier Panis overtakes Allan McNish to seize 14th place. Lap 12: Rubens Barrichello is just 0.934 seconds behind Michael Schumacher as the Ferrari team-mates continue to race free of team orders. Lap 10: Jarno Trulli is running well in fourth place in his Renault, within a second of David Coulthard in third. Lap nine: Third-placed David Coulthard in the McLaren is 7.418 seconds behind leader Michael Schumacher. Lap eight: Rubens Barrichello has cut the gap to leader Michael Schumacher to just over a second. Lap seven: Takuma Sato briefly leaves the track after trying to pass Heinz-Harald Frentzen. Jenson Button benefits to pass both of them and Sato gets past Frentzen at the second attempt. Lap six: Rubens Barrichello is not letting Ferrari team-mate Michael Schumacher pull away from him. Lap five: Nick Heidfeld and Giancarlo Fisichella are fighting it out for eighth place. Lap four: Ralf Schumacher is way down the field after his collision with Juan Pablo Montoya. Lap three: The Ferraris of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello are starting to pull away. Lap two: Ralf Schumacher gets ahead of his Williams team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya to move into fourth but the pair take each other out as Montoya tries to get back on terms. Ralf Schumacher is forced to return to the pits for a new rear wing. Montoya is back to seventh. Lap one: Michael Schumacher enjoys a trouble-free start as he reaches the first turn ahead of Ferrari team-mate Rubens Barrichello. 1702 Michael Schumacher overshoots his pole position grid slot and is forced to reverse back into place. 1900 The drivers roar away from the grid for the parade lap. 1855 The cars are bathed in bright sunshine as they await the warm-up lap. 1830: The cars leave the pits for their final warm-up laps before forming up on the grid. Michael Schumacher and Ferrari start the race as hot favourites after dominating practice and qualifying. But there is some doubt that their Bridgestone tyres are durable enough, which could give a chance to the leading Michelin teams, McLaren and Williams. |
