| Da Matta plays down Toyota move ![]() Da Matta is dominating the Cart series this year Cart championship leader Cristiano Da Matta says his chances of joining Formula One team Toyota are only 20%. Da Matta and Olivier Panis have been strongly linked with the vacant positions at Toyota after the team announced that Mika Salo and Allan McNish would not be staying with the team. But Da Matta has played down his chances.
"I know I'm near the top of Toyota's list of possible drivers, but right now it is a 20% chance," he told the Reuters news agency. "My boss doesn't want me to drive the F1 car again until the Champ Car season is over," he added. Da Matta impressed Toyota's F1 team in a test in May, but his Cart team, Newman-Haas Racing, have a contract with the driver for next season. That means he would have to be bought out of his contract. The Brazilian has previously insisted that he would not want to move to Formula One unless he had a competitive car. Da Matta is no stranger to racing in Europe. He made his name in Europe racing in Formula Three and Formula 3000 before going back to America in 1997. | See also: 29 Jul 02 | Motorsport 14 Jul 02 | Motorsport 07 Jul 02 | Motorsport Top Formula One stories now: Links to more Formula One stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
