Carpentier breaks Da Matta run
Patrick Carpentier
Carpenteir celebrates his win with a spin

Patrick Carpentier won the Cart Grand Prix of Cleveland to deny Cristiano da Matta a fifth consecutive win.

Carpentier brought his Reynard-Ford home 17 seconds clear of Michael Andretti to collect the second career win.

The 30-year-old Carpentier, whose best finish this season had been fourth at Japan in April, won for the first time since the Michigan 500 last season.

In the next race we'll be strong again. It's no big deal
Cristiano da Matta
Da Matta led for the first 19 laps until his engine gave up on lap 20 on the temporary course around the runways of Bruke Lakefront Airport.

Canada's Paul Tracy was third and Sweden's Kenny Brack fourth.

Da Matta was striving to break the record for most consecutive wins in the series until he was forced out.

The Brazilian still leads the drivers standings by 50 points after his two nearest rivals, compatriot Bruno Junqueira and Scotland's Dario Franchitti failed to finish.
