| Magnificent Monty wins again ![]() Montgomerie has been Mr Reliable for his skipper M'gomerie/Harr'gton v Mick'son/Toms Colin Montgomerie lived up to his legendary status as he teamed up with Padraig Harrington to beat Phil Mickelson and David Toms in some style. Europe's Big Daddy picked up his third victory in two days and stayed unbeaten to help Harrington end his losing streak at The Belfry. Montgomerie's trusty partnership with Bernhard Langer was broken for the first time as he went out for his fourth match of the weekend. Langer was troubled by a neck strain, but Montgomerie shrugged off concerns about his injured back to remain Sam Torrance's general out on the course. Monty's coach Dennis Pugh claimed the Scot was "knackered" though there were no outward signs of weariness as he made a fabulous start. Three birdies in the first five holes saw the Americans trailing in his wake, though Mickelson reduced the arrears to two with a tap-in win at the seventh. Montgomerie's riposte was instant as he flew a beauty over the water at eight to help restore the three-hole advantage. Enough was enough for tough competitor Mickelson and two quickfire successes pegged Europe back before Harrington claimed his sole win of the round at 11. The Americans peppered the flag at the short 12th and it was Mickelson who kept Europe in check as the lead dropped back to a single hole again. With Harrington pulling his iron shots and looking slightly out of sorts, it was left to Montgomerie to steady the European ship. A prodigious winning putt of monster proportions at 14 was just the tonic for Europe and they led by two again. That was how it stayed until Team USA capitulated on the 17th green. Montgomerie, famously without a Major title, said: "I want to call the British Open the Ryder Cup and then I'd be OK." |
