A hard-earned European half in the last match squared proceedings to set up what promises to be an equally exhilarating final day.

David Duval and Mark Calcavecchia won on the last with a half, having turned the match around on the back nine.

They had been three down on the front nine but went on a run and were eight-under par in the 11 holes to 16.

The match turned at the 10th when Duval drove the green while both Swedes found the water, Jesper Parnevik after attempting to follow the American's lead.

The setback stopped the European momentum while the visitors went from strength to strength.

However, they were given a helping hand by their opponents, who lost their 100% record as a partnership in the process.

After Love chipped in from the fringe on 17, Sergio Garcia missed a short putt that would have guaranteed Europe at least half a point.

Both the Spaniard and Lee Westwood bogeyed the last, missing sinkable putts after Love had finished with a par four.

Colin Montgomerie and Padraig Harrington closed out a memorable match on the 17th after both their opponents missed with putts for a half.

The match was undoubtedly the best of the afternoon with birdies on all but two holes.

The loss was the first Phil Mickelson and David Toms had endured in four outings at The Belfry.

But they pushed their hosts all the way, most notably when Mickelson won with birdies at nine, 10 and 12.

A Paul McGinley birdie on the last won Europe half a point to round off an amazing day of Ryder Cup golf.

McGinley and Darren Clarke refused to give up and their dogged determination was finally rewarded at the last.

They were never ahead and clawed back to all square from two down at the 13th and one down at the 17th.

Scott Hoch's birdie at 17 looked certain to give the visitors a one-point lead going into the final day, but McGinley had other ideas.
