| Euro stars suffer collapse ![]() Tiger comes up trumps in the end Westwood/Garcia v Love III/Woods Tiger Woods and Davis Love III came from behind to pull off a sensational one-hole win in Saturday's fourballs. Their triumph denied brave European pair Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia their fourth consecutive point at the Ryder Cup and enabled Woods to avenge his defeat to them in Friday's foursomes. The European pair were left to rue missed putting chances on the final two holes which saw them snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
Then on the final green, his English team-mate missed from a similar distance to finish for a bogey and handed the point over to the Americans. "We knew that we just needed to hang in there," said a delighted Woods after the match. "We knew that birdies were key - we needed to keep making birdies and we did that." But it was a disappointing result for the Europeans after a gutsy display in the afternoon. The European pair's hunger was there for all to see on the 10th, which had been at the centre of controversy earlier in the week when European captain Sam Torrance decided to play from the par four's back tee. Garcia, showing the same daring he had displayed on the first day, drove straight at the green. The gamble paid off yet again and, with one ball safely in position, Westwood unleashed a similarly powerful drive over the trees to join his team-mate squarely on the green.
"We knew a couple of guys would go for it, but that was our percentage play," said Love. "We were going to take me with a wedge and Tiger with a wedge over trying to knock it on that green." Unsurprisingly it was the wrong decision and, when Woods failed to match Westwood's birdie, the Americans only had themselves to blame for going one-down. But Woods and Love resolved to raise their game and, combined with Europeans' late putting collapse, took a last-gasp win. |
