| Sunday, 2 February, 2003, 06:54 GMT Els triumphs again ![]() Els beat Nick Faldo by one shot Sunday's round-up Heineken Classic Ernie Els has stormed to a third victory in four starts this season after winning the Heineken Classic in Melbourne. The South Africa, who had been 10 shots off the lead at the end of day two, produced a final round of 65 for a one-shot victory.
Els said: "I made some good saves coming home, but I'm happy with the way I played. "I was a little tired but I seemed to have got some energy the last few days." England's Nick Faldo, targeting his first title in six years, was second with Australian Peter Lonard, whose bogey on the 18th scuppered his chances of a play-off. Faldo had started the day in the lead but slipped behind Els heading on to the final green. The former world number one needed a birdie to set up a play-off on the final hole, but his approach went through the green and he battled to make par. Bob Hope Classic Tim Herron carded eight birdies in 12 holes to move into a four-stroke lead ahead of the final day in La Quinta, California. The American had started Saturday level as co-leader with Stephen Ames but his round of 65 was the pick of the front-runners.
Herron is now on 29 under par after four rounds of the event, equalling the tournament record set by Joe Durant en route to victory two years ago. Victory on Sunday would ensure Herron's fourth career PGA title, his last coming back in 1999 at Bay Hill. "Yeah, I've got to shoot low tomorrow," he said. "If you're within six, eight, 10 shots of the lead, you have a chance to win the golf tournament." Fellow American Jay Haas and Canadian Mike Weir recorded rounds of 68 and 67 respectively to move into a share of second place at 25-under. Chris DiMarco and David Gossett are both in fifth place a stroke further back. The harsh 13-under-par cut, however, accounted for a number of big names. Former Open champion David Duval, PGA Championship winner Rich Beem and Jesper Parnevik all failed to qualify for the final day's play. |
