Torrance tips Monty for Major
Sam Torrance and Colin Montgomerie
The duo developed a close bond at The Belfry
European captain Sam Torrance believes Colin Montgomerie's outstanding performance at this year's Ryder Cup could help him finally win one of golf's Majors.

Montgomerie was one of the stars of Europe's triumph over the United States at The Belfry, finishing with four-and-a-half points from a possible five.

Torrance - who collected the BBC Team of the Year award on behalf of his players on Sunday - said the Ryder Cup experience could provide an edge to Montgomerie's game.

We have all known that Colin is capable of beating anyone

Sam Torrance

"Monty can most certainly win a major," said Torrance.

"I saw a different Colin Montgomerie at The Belfry - he was happier and more contented on and off the course than I had ever seen him.

"I think Colin will change as a result of what happened that week, and if he doesn't then he is a fool.

"He was so good and such a rock for the whole team that he should take a lot from that and take it into his individual game.

"Colin has won two tournaments in the last month and hopefully he can take that on and win a major next year - I think he has every chance of doing it.

"We have all known that Colin is capable of beating anyone, it has just been a case of his temperament not being quite right over the years."
