| Monday, 8 July, 2002, 01:46 GMT 02:46 UK Kelly's surge brings glory Kelly is now third in the money list Jerry Kelly shot a seven-under-par 65 to claim only his second US PGA Tour victory at the Western Open. The 35-year-old American finished two shots ahead of Davis Love III with a 19-under total of 269. Overnight leader Robert Allenby of Australia slumped with a three-over final round of 75 to finish seven shots behind the winner.
For Kelly, winning the Western Open was the ideal start to what he considers the most important three-week stretch of his season. Next week he plays in the Greater Milwaukee Open, just down the road from his native Madison, Wisconsin, before heading to the Open at Muirfield. He said: "I have been gearing up for this stretch all year. I don't really try to pick my spots but what a great three weeks this could be." Crucial shot Love was playing in the group ahead of Kelly and applied some pressure by birdying the 14th and 15th holes. "Well, my wife told me to shoot 63, so I was a couple short of her expectations," said Kelly. "But, you know, it felt really comfortable out there. I didn't try and do anything special. I knew what I had to do with my game." Kelly made eight birdies in his final round but believes the event hinged on the par-four 13th, where he scrambled to make par after an errant tee shot. "That was my tournament right there, no question," he said. "I hooked it over there in the bunker, and I had no other shot but sand wedge. I just had to trust myself with that tight pin to hit an eight-iron in there and get it close. "That gave me the feeling that I wasn't going to back-pedal." |
