Inkster claims Open title
America's Julie Inkster
Inkster made up two strokes to overtake Sorenstam

Julie Inkster shot a closing round 66 to win her second US Women's Open title on Sunday.

The American had trailed overnight leader and world number one Annika Sorenstam by two shots going into the final day.

But she fought back with five birdies and only a solitary bogey at the par-five 17th to finish at four-under-par 276 and claim victory by two shots.

I think to win at any age is tough - 42 is just a little tougher
Juli Inkster

The 42-year-old, who first won the title in 1999, said: "I hope I don't wake up for a while. It was awesome."

Inkster is the second-oldest player to win a major - Babe Zaharias was 43 when she won the Women's Open in 1954.

And she joins Zaharias as the only women to win two majors after turning 40.

Inkster said: "I think to win at any age is tough - 42 is just a little tougher."

Outplayed

She is the only American to win the title in the last eight years and earns $535,000 - the largest prize in women's golf - for the victory.

Sorenstam, who was trying to win the tournament for the third time, carded an even-par 70.

She was the only other player in the field to complete the 72 holes under par at the Prairie Dunes Country Club.

She said: "I did everything I could. I think I played great golf. Juli played excellent. She really outplayed me.

"There was nothing I could do. I gave it all, and I'm happy about that."

Australia's Shani Waugh shot a 72 for third place at three-over-par.
