Stack turns defence into attack

Arsenal reserve goalkeeper Graham Stack has won cult status at Belgian club Beveren - after thumping a supporter from rivals Royal Antwerp.

Stack was subjected to abuse and missile throwing during the game, and a number of Antwerp fans ran on to the pitch to confront him at the final whistle.

"Out of nowhere, I saw all these fans running at me," Stack told The Sun.

"I could see someone running at me and it was obvious he wasn't going to stop. I swung at him out of self-defence."

If only Stack's mentor David Seaman was as good at standing up to rampaging attackers.

A referee in Belgium caused a stir by ending a game early because he felt sorry for the losing team.

Marc Gevaert blew for time after 86 minutes as FC Wiftschate trailed Vladslo 16-0 because he was worried someone might get sent off.

"After an hour at a score of 11-0, the players of Wijtschate came to beg me to end the game," Gavaert told Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws.

"Near the end, when the score was 16-0, they became so frustrated they started to kick the Vladslo players for nothing and played mad tricks at them.

"I felt so sorry for them. And I didn't want to send off the boys so that's why I ended the game early."

If only West Ham had it so lucky.
