| Monday, 10 February, 2003, 13:17 GMT Kelly set for key role
Quinn snapped up Kelly in time to make his debut in Saturday's win at promotion-chasing Doncaster Rovers. And Quinn believes the 36-year-old, who was released by Oldham earlier this season after six seasons with the club, can have a key role to play in a run of big games for the Vics. Quinn said: "I wasn't really looking for a keeper because Matthew Parry is only going to be out for a week or two and we've got young Ben Connett. "But I had a call and the chance to get Gary in was too good an opportunity to pass by because of his experience and his ability. "You could see on Saturday that the defence had a bit more confidence about them with a voice behind talking all the time. "It can only help our two young keepers by having someone like him here and with some important games to come, I'm sure he's going to help us out." The Vics face play-off chasers Hereford and Morecambe in their next two Nationwide Conference games, with an FA Trophy tie at favourites Yeovil Town in between. And Kelly, who has played over 500 League games in his career with Oldham, Bury and Newcastle United, is set to figure in all three after agreeing an initial month's contract. "He's come in for a month to have a look at us and already he's said that we have a good side and a good team-spirit and he's enjoying it," Quinn added. |
