Wenger blames Leeds
Arsene Wenger
Wenger says Arsenal don't need new players

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes Leeds have shot themselves in the foot over the Rio Ferdinand saga.

Ferdinand looks set to move to Manchester United after handing in a transfer request to Leeds.

Arsene Wenger, right, with midfielder Patrick Vieira
Wenger had a battle keeping hold of Vieira

But Wenger told BBC Sport Online the Elland Road club's handling of the situation has left him with little doubt that Ferdinand will leave them.

Wenger was involved in a similar transfer tussle last season when he was trying to keep French midfielder Patrick Vieira from the clutches of Old Trafford.

"There is a difference there because we issued the same statements about Patrick saying that he would stay," said Wenger.

"Leeds look like they have a hesitation and once you show a hesitation it means that you lose the player.

"So, now I think that Rio Ferdinand will go to Manchester United."

Ferdinand will be a strong asset for Manchester United

Wenger joked that the bank would probably refuse Arsenal any money to bid for Ferdinand.

But he added: "I think it will make Manchester United stronger and Leeds weaker like we all know.

"And of course he will be a strong asset for Manchester United."

Wenger also confirmed that Arsenal will not be entering the transfer market again before the new season.

Wenger said: "We don't need anybody at the moment. We have no need to buy anybody."

Arsenal have entered the transfer market just once ahead of the new season, signing French centre-back Pascal Cygan from Lens.
