Only really troubled twice but did well when called on. The first save was a vital touch to stop Aliyev equalising, the other stopping a shot from close range. Mark Delaney
Broke down the right flank well and provided some good balls for the men up front. He hobbled off early, but another solid performance in a Wales shirt. Andy Melville
The veteran Fulham centre back used his experience well, making important challenges when required. Built a good, solid-looking partnership with Robert Page. Robert Page
The Sheffield United player came into the side at the last minute for the injured Danny Gabbidon. He let nobody down, cleaning up when needed and was solid at the back. Darren Barnard
Playing out of position, the Grimsby player did well at left-back. He kept alert and was aware of any danger. Had a good battle with the Azerbaijan striker Gurbanov. Robert Earnshaw
The Cardiff City striker was in a new role on the right wing and looked exciting with his pace. Sometimes wanted one touch too many, but on the whole had a good game. Simon Davies
The new golden boy of Welsh soccer was, by his standards, quiet for large spells of the game, and should have looked to run more at the home side's porous defence. Carl Robinson
The Portsmouth player won his 10th cap for Wales and came close to scoring his first goal with a volley that went wide. Solid show that gave others the freedom to play. Gary Speed
The captain had an excellent game. He led by example and was always in the thick of things. Capped a top performance with a powerful header after just nine minutes. Ryan Giggs
Giggs could have scored a few in this game, but was often marked by two or three men. His early vision opened up the Azerbaijan defence on more than one occasion. John Hartson
Used his strength and battled throughout. He was unlucky to hit the underside of the bar in the first half, but made up for it by heading in his eighth goal for his country. Substitutes:
Come on in for Delaney with 20 minutes to go and slotted in well without needing to really exert himself.
Came on in place of Earnshaw right at the end. Paul Trollope |
