| Monday, 18 November, 2002, 16:13 GMT Pipe dreams of Earnie ![]() Pipe hopes to follow in Earnshaw's footsteps Coventry City midfielder David Pipe looks set to make his Wales U21 debut against Azerbaijan in the Shafa Stadium in Baku on Tuesday night. Caerphilly-born Pipe, 19, lived in the same street as Robert Earnshaw and hopes to use the stage to follow in the international footsteps of his childhood friend. Wales U21 will be hoping to end a five-year run (30 games) without a win. Wales have lost Gareth Williams (Crystal Palace), Lee Fowler (Coventry), Stephen Rowland (Port Vale) and Brian Stock (Bournemouth) through injury, and have called in Richard Evans (Birmingham), Kevin Gall (Bristol Rovers) and Mark Jones (Wrexham). Pipe, who has broken into the Sky Blues' first team this season, said: "We go back a bit, 'Earnie' lived just down the street from me and we've always been good mates. "He's done so well in the last couple of seasons, I hope I can follow him into the senior squad one day." Pipe has played for Wales at under-16, under-17 and under-19 level. "I'm very pleased with the call up, it's a reward for the way I have been working this season," he said. |
