Hughes praises Coleman
Wales defender Chris Coleman and manager Mark Hughes celebrate beating Belarus in Hughes' first game in charge
Coleman and Hughes have a long Wales history
Wales manager Mark Hughes paid tribute to Chris Coleman after the Fulham defender announced his playing retirement on Wednesday.

Coleman won 32 caps for Wales, playing first as an international team-mate and then as one of his players when Hughes stepped up to the national job.

"Chris has been a big player for us and he was certainly missed during our last campaign," Hughes said.

"He's also been a great team-mate - he's a great character and it is a big loss for Welsh football.

Anybody with a lesser character wouldn't have been able to get so near

"It's a big blow for the lad because he loves his football and he loves coming away with the international squads."

Coleman suffered an horrific car crash in January 2001 and for a while there were doubts whether he would even walk again.

But the 32-year-old fought back, undergoing several operations and months of physiotherapy to get himself back on the pitch.

Coleman managed to play several reserve matches for Fulham and even came on for Wales as a late substitute in the friendly victory over Germany last May.

But in consultation with doctors, Coleman finally had to admit that he would never recover to the level needed to play top-flight football regularly.

Hughes learnt to respect Coleman's defensive qualities

"We were all hoping that he would get back, but speaking to medical people who've seen similar injuries they said it would be very difficult," Hughes added.

"The fact that he's been able to get so near is really down to the strength of the man.

"Anybody with a lesser character wouldn't have been able to get so near - it was a terrible injury and even to get mobile from that was a big surprise to everybody."

But Coleman's involvement with football will continue, with Fulham coach Jean Tigana and Hughes himself keen to use Coleman as a coach.

"I've no doubt that Chris will make the grade as a coach, he is made to measure as a front-line coach," Hughes said.

"Chris has got a great personality, good character - nice and loud - and he'll be a success."
