Scots call on Old Firm duo
Don Hutchison training with Scotland
Don Hutchison returns to the Scotland scene
Old Firm youngsters Jamie Smith and Bob Malcolm have been given a first call up to the Scotland squad to face the Republic of Ireland.

There are also recalls for West Ham's Don Hutchison and Wolves pair Kenny Miller and Colin Cameron.

Hutchison has spent almost a year on the sidelines with a cruciate ligaments injury but could be set to play his first game under national coach Berti Vogts at Hampden Park on 12 February.

The last of Hutchison's 19 caps came in the 2-1 win over Latvia in October 2001.

Vogts has been impressed by attacking midfielder Smith, despite the 22-year-old only featuring eight times for Celtic this season.

"He is very quick and I am looking for a very quick player," said Vogts.

"I do not know what his best position is. At the moment he is playing on the left side but I think maybe he would play better in front.

Rangers defender Bob Malcolm
Bob Malcolm has impressed Berti Vogts
"He is very confident on the ball and that is good."

Malcolm, also 22, has been an able deputy in central defence at Ibrox - making 22 appearances for Rangers this term.

"Bob Malcolm did so well against the German future team in December so it is a chance for him," said Vogts, referring to the 3-3 draw in which the defender scored.

Kevin Kyle has been named in both the senior and under 21 squads.

Celtic goalkeeper Robert Douglas is named despite being recovering from a hernia operation and is unlikely to take any part in the match.

Leeds defender Dominic Matteo will be forced to pull out if he cannot recover from a knee injury.

Rangers striker Steven Tnompson is also carrying an injury.

Scotland squad:

Goalkeepers Robert Douglas (Celtic), Paul Gallacher (Dundee United), Neil Sullivan (Tottenham Hotspur)

Defenders Graham Alexander (Preston North End), Russell Anderson (Aberdeen), Steven Caldwell (Newcastle United), Christian Dailly (West Ham United), Robert Malcolm (Rangers), Dominic Matteo (Leeds United), Steven Pressley (Heart of Midlothian), Maurice Ross (Rangers)

Midfield Colin Cameron (Wolverhampton W.), Scot Gemmill (Everton), Jackie McNamara (Celtic), Paul Devlin (Birmingham City), Barry Ferguson (Rangers), Paul Lambert (Celtic), Gary Naysmith (Everton), Jamie Smith (Celtic)

Forwards Stephen Crawford, (Dunfermline Athletic), Scott Dobie (West Bromwich Albion), Don Hutchison (West Ham United), Kevin Kyle (Sunderland), Neil McCann (Rangers), Kenny Miller (Wolverhampton W.), Steven Thompson (Rangers).
