Montgomery courts Scotland
Scotland are on the lookout for new talent
Sheffield United midfielder Nick Montgomery is the latest Englishman to pledge himself to Scotland.

The 21-year-old has a Scottish grandmother and has sent her birth and marriage certificates to the Scottish Football Association.

Montgomery is eligible for Rainer Bonhof's under-21 squad and is also hoping to get the nod when Vogts next picks a B squad for forthcoming Future Team fixtures with Turkey, the Czech Republic and Germany.

One Bramall Lane team-mate, on-loan Celtic winger John-Paul McGovern, was picked for the the first Future Team squad.

"It is something I have been thinking about for a long time now," said the Leeds-born player.

"My dad's family are from Scotland and had a farm near Aberdeen. We used to go up there a lot when I was younger. I love Scotland."

Montgomery's case has been backed by another Yorkshireman who enjoyed success in a dark blue jersey - United player-coach Stuart McCall.

McCall was also born in Leeds but used his tartan roots to win 40 Scotland caps between 1990 and 1998 while at Everton and then Rangers.

Montgomery said: "I spoke with Stuart and he said it was a great idea.

"He's been a great role model for me and at 38 he's still running around like a teenager."

Montgomery has been on the bench since recovering from an ankle knock he picked up during the Blades' 2-1 win over Leeds in the Worthington Cup.
