| Sunday, 16 February, 2003, 12:50 GMT Eriksson anger at England stars ![]() Sven-Goran Eriksson was unhappy with senior players Sven-Goran Eriksson is reported to have had an angry exchange with four England stars after they went missing from the dressing room after the defeat against Australia. Several Sunday newspapers claimed Eriksson was unhappy to note they were absent when he returned to conduct an inquest into the 3-1 defeat at Upton Park. Liverpool's Michael Owen, Chelsea's Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdinand of Manchester United and Newcastle midfield man Kieron Dyer were alleged to be the guilty men.
They had left the dressing room area, but were ordered to return after it became clear Eriksson wanted them with the rest of the squad and expected them to wait for his post-match de-briefing. Manchester United captain David Beckham was also missing, but he had been given permission to be absent to conduct media interviews and returned to the dressing room. It ended an unhappy night for Eriksson and his first choice team after they were comfortably beaten by Australia. Eriksson was heavily criticised for choosing a different team for each half, and England's senior stars came under heavy fire for their lacklustre 45-minute display. |
