Premiership pair called up
Carlo Cudicini has been outstanding for Chelsea this season
Cudicini has been outstanding for Chelsea this season
Chelsea goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini is a surprise inclusion in the Italy squad to face Turkey in a friendly next week.

And Manchester City striker Nicolas Anelka has been recalled to the France squad for their match against Yugoslavia.

The uncapped Cudicini's call-up marks the completion of a remarkable journey from Italian football's wilderness to the fringe of the national team.

Chelsea signed the 29-year-old from Serie C outfit Castel di Sangrio, where he had ended up after failing to make the grade at AC Milan, Lazio and Como.

But he has been in outstanding form for the Londoners this season and has kept five clean sheets in a row.

Anelka has scored seven Premiership goals this term

That record has nudged national coach Giovanni Trapattoni into giving him the chance to follow in the footsteps of his father, the famous Milan, Roma and Italy keeper Fabio Cudicini.

Anelka's return to the French squad after being left out of the World Cup party is less unexpected.

When Lyon striker Sidney Govou was forced to pull out with a knee injury on Saturday night, the City star was the obvious replacement.

Anelka has won 27 caps for France but has not represented his country since April.

Since moving to Maine Road for 13m in the summer, the 23-year-old has scored seven goals in 14 Premiership appearances this season.
